With early results in Tuesday, the Mount Vernon Fire Department’s nearly $30 million bond request, which would allow it to build a new fire station, is failing.
Just over 50% of voters are rejecting the proposal. Bonds require a 60% supermajority to pass.
Aside from the new station, the bond would go toward safety and space upgrades at the department’s two other stations.
About 4,500 people voted in Tuesday’s special election, according to the Secretary of State’s website.
Of those, 2,279 rejected the proposal, while 2,234 approved it.
“I’m hopeful that these preliminary numbers will change,” Mount Vernon Fire Chief Bryan Brice said.
Brice said the department would continue to work with the city to share its needs with voters and make another request in the future.
