The Yakima Police and Fire departments are praising two vigilant young girls who spotted a duplex fire and alerted their parents Friday afternoon.
The girls spotted smoke coming from a duplex in the 600 block of E. Race St at about 12:55 p.m. No one who lives at the duplex was home when the fire started, according to police and Yakima Fire Capt. Tim Kerns.
In a tweet, police said the girls quickly went and told their parents, who then called 911.
Firefighters arrived and saw smoke and flames coming from a window. They were able to knock down the fire quickly. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Although smoke filled one of the units at the duplex, fire damage was ultimately contained to one room, Kerns said.
