A KIMA investigation uncovered a limited number of ambulances serving our area. That shortage causing delays when you call 911. Recently the Yakima fire chief spoke out, citing private ambulance companies prioritizing transports between hospitals over actual 911 calls. Today, we went on a ride along with Advance Life Support, or ALS ambulance. We watched their crew using their lights and sirens after receiving a call of a victim possibly suffering from a serious injury. However, they that isn't always the case. Paramedics from ALS tells Action News, the city of Yakima requires them to respond to simple welfare calls with those lights and sirens. They say it's that kind of call that puts them and others on the road in danger, for something that is not a real emergency. ALS says paramedics going to non-urgent calls creates a shortage in emergency services. But some fire chiefs and emergency management directors across the county, including the Yakima Fire Chief says, the shortage comes from private ambulance companies, like ALS, prioritizing transfers between two hospitals.
