Major maintenance will force a fire station in north Everett to temporarily close starting this Friday, March 1.
Station 2, which is approximately 50 years old, is located at 2201 16th Street.
Its temporary closure is expected to impact response times during some emergencies.
By mid-April, a small weight room at the station will be transformed into a separate sleeping area and bathroom for female employees. All of the station's carpet will be pulled out. Crews will remove asbestos from the material that holds it together.
"It’s a 1970s building, so it’s an uncomfortable place to be a firefighter in terms of facilities. We can’t afford to replace the entire station," said Everett Fire Chief Dave DeMarco.
