All campfires are now banned in Washington wildlife areas and water access areas after the Department of Fish and Wildlife judged the state's wildfire risk too great.
Even campsite fire rings must stay cold during the restriction period, which will remain in place until the seasonal risk of fire abates. Also banned in the affected areas: Smoking, except in an enclosed vehicle; welding and operating chainsaws; driving a vehicle off developed roads; and discharge of firearms for any purpose other than lawful hunting. The restrictions go into effect today.
Personal camp stoves and lanterns fueled by propane, liquid petroleum, or liquid petroleum gas are still allowed.
"Observing fire restrictions and exercising common sense will go a long way toward preserving public recreation lands, wildlife habitat, and safety for local communities and the recreating public," said Cynthia Wilkerson, manager of the WDFW Lands Division.
