Firefighters are trying to stop a fire that crested Rattlesnake Mountain Friday morning north of Richland. The Cold Creek Fire scorched 14,000 acres and blackened the north side of the mountain after starting shortly before 3:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the Washington state Department of Natural Resources. The fire was estimated to be about 10 percent contained Friday morning, according to Ron Fryer, public information officer at the incident command center at the fire site. Cooler temperatures and lighter winds are helping firefighters battle the blaze, he said. Firefighters have set a back burn on the south side of the mountain that is burning upward to where the wildfire has crested the mountain on the north side.
