Seconds matter. Teamwork matters. Firefighters are out the door in less than a minute when a call comes in.
At Fire Ops 101, people from around Washington state, Idaho, Montana and Alaska come to the HAMMER training center in Richland to see what it means to be a firefighter. Those people are politicians, lawyers, policymakers, reporters and more. The International Association of Firefighters 7th District has been doing this for 15 years.
After gearing up, it was time to participate in real-life scenarios, all while keeping in mind the theme -- 'Time Critical, Highly Technical and Labor Intensive.'
Participants got to see what it was like to perform a "mega code." The Walla Walla Fire Department set up two mannequins. One was intubated, given CPR and shocked. Another was transported into an ambulance as time was ticking.
