The Enumclaw Fire Department was one of nine departments to send aid to a brush fire in Bonney Lake last week. According to Bonney Lake’s East Pierce Fire and Rescue, the fire — which was located just past the state Route 410/Veterans Memorial Drive intersection, on the downhill trek to Sumner — was reported around 2 p.m. on Aug. 5. EPFR firefighters first reported an 80-foot by 200-foot brush fire, but it eventually grew to consume about two or three acres, though no homes, structures, or people were under threat. The westbound lanes of the highway were closed, however, from Meyers Road. Part of the difficulty in putting this fire out was that the burning hill was extremely steep, but it was brought under control about two hours later, though crews continued to mop up hot spots after 4 p.m. Falling debris kept the highway closed for at least another hour afterward.
