Redmond Interim Fire Chief Don Horton will leave his post next month after taking a permanent position as a fire chief near Atlanta, Georgia, where he can be closer to his family.
The city announced Horton's resignation Monday, set to take effect on Friday, Sept. 14. Horton served as Redmond's Deputy Fire Chief for four and a half years and has more than four decades of experience in Virginia, Arkansas and Virginia.
According to a news release, Horton is known for his focus on community outreach and creating new programs, including an EMS bike team and the Women in Fire Service Symposium.
Redmond Mayor Angela Birney said she will work with Horton on a transition plan over the coming weeks and will determine a path forward to fill the upcoming vacancy.
