An injured trail runner is sharing his miraculous story of survival after breaking part of his leg on a remote trail on the Olympic Peninsula.
Joe Oldendorf says he crawled for more than 10 hours until rescuers found him early Saturday morning on the Duckabush Trail, which is west of Hood Canal.
Oldendorf was released from Harborview Medical Center on Sunday evening.
He says about 2 hours, 45 minutes into his journey on Friday afternoon, he slipped on an icy patch on the trail. It's a trail he's used a couple of times before, he said.
"I knew right away that I hurt my ankle and then I sat down to examine it and my foot kinda flopped to the side like it was untethered," Oldendorf told KOMO News. "So yeah, at that point I knew I was in deep trouble."
He knew his only way out would be to crawl, he said. His goal was to reach several people that he remembered seeing camping about 3 miles into the trail, he added.
