In a post on Facebook, the Yakima Firefighters Association says city council has eliminated "any and all fire prevention and education." In that same post, they give stats pointing out an increase in youth fire setters as more prevention programs have disappeared. The union writes in the post that in 2008, they believe thirty-five percent of Yakima's fires may have been set by someone. The say in 2018, that percentage increased to more than half. Between those years, they say the city eliminated the department's daytime investigator. While in Selah, the fire department has a firefighter who is in charge of fire prevention and education.
