Crews spent hours battling a two-alarm fire Sunday at a Puyallup elementary school, emergency officials said. Puyallup firefighters initially responded to the scene, Karshner Elementary at 15th Street NW and 8th Avenue NW, at around 11 a.m. after receiving an alert from an automatic fire alarm. When crews arrived, they found black smoke and flames erupting from the school. A second alarm was sent out shortly afterward and units from other fire departments also headed toward the fire. No one was inside the school at the time, and no injuries were reported. Damage to the building was believed to be extensive. "Many of the folks here, their kids either go to the school or went to the school. So it’s very well-known and very well loved throughout the community. It is a big blow to the community," said Darrin Shaw of Central Pierce Fire & Rescue.
