The Point Roberts Fire Chief is asking the federal government to consider opening some international transit. Point Roberts is a trans-border Whatcom County community located near the U.S.-Canada border with no direct access to the mainland United States. Chief Christopher Carleton wrote a letter to President Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other officials, saying their residents are particularly dependent on transit through Canada for everything from basic services to healthcare. With the closure of the U.S.-Canada border due to the coronavirus pandemic, he says residents are living under the effective equivalent of house arrest and he asks them to work together to find a way for US, dual citizens and green card holders of Point Roberts to transit openly as needed to the mainland. He asks the same for Canadians and others who legally own property in Point Roberts.
