Bellevue firefighters are mourning the passing of the department's first and only Disaster Search Canine. "Libby was a fixture around the department for many years as she participated in open houses, school presentations, CERT classes and structural collapse rescue drills," Bellevue firefighters wrote in tribute on their Facebook page. "She enjoyed showcasing her talents for everyone from the City Manager to local school children who would come to Station 3 specifically requesting to see the 'fire dog.' " A firefighter discovered Libby several years ago as a stray and together they underwent a 2.5 year training program to get nationally certified by FEMA as a search team in 2008. She worked for eight years and was among those helping in the initial search for those who needed help in the wake of the Oso mudslides.
