For once, the coronavirus pandemic actually may have saved lives.
Nobody was home when fire swept through and destroyed four trailers at the Black Mountain Ranch campground along the Mount Baker Highway Monday afternoon, May 4.
“It was a pretty good fire, and thankfully nobody was there,” Whatcom County Fire District 14 Chief Jerry Debruin told The Bellingham Herald Tuesday. “About 90 percent of those trailers are owned by Canadians, so there hasn’t been anybody staying there since the pandemic hit.” Firefighters were called at 2:01 p.m. to the 6400 block of Mount Baker Highway for the report of smoke. By the time first crews arrived on scene, two trailers were already fully involved in flames, Debruin said, and the call was upgraded to a structure fire.
