A man and his dog were uninjured after they were rescued from his moored vessel at the Water Street Marina.
The fireboat Guardian and other units of East Jefferson Fire Rescue responded to a call for a vessel assist in high winds and churning seas at 11:57 a.m. Sunday at the Water Street Marina in Irondale.
A broken mast was endangering the moored vessel and the man aboard was concerned about his safety, prompting the call to 9-1-1, said Leah Speser, EJFR public information officer, in a press release. Despite the hazardous conditions, the firefighters aboard Guardian rescued the man and his dog, Speser said.
EJFR assistant chief Pete Brummel reminded boaters to use caution.
“This rescue highlights the importance for boaters — as well as kayakers, paddleborders and others — of keeping a close check on the weather before going out on the water,” he said.
