Two people were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition after a crash Thursday on U.S. 2., about 3 miles west of Index.
Both of those injured are males, but their ages and hometowns were unknown, Sky Valley Fire Chief Eric Andrews said.
Around 12:30 p.m., a pickup truck towing a cargo trailer flipped and rolled 30 feet down an embankment. The two were trapped inside as the vehicle caught fire. Flames spread to trees and brush, but have since been extinguished.
An off-duty firefighter, Dave Hanson, drove by around the same time. He works for Fire District 7 and volunteers for Sky Valley Fire, Andrews said.
Hanson found a surveyor stick on the side of the road and used it to smash the windshield. He then pulled the two people out.
“He did a really excellent job,” Andrews said.
No other vehicles were involved. Both directions of U.S. 2 were shut down for the emergency response.
