A waterfront pier under construction in Seattle collapsed Sunday afternoon, tossing two workers into Elliott Bay and leaving them hospitalized.
Seven workers were working on Pier 58 when an alarm sounded that the pier was collapsing. Moments later two were in the water as about a fifth of the pier collapsed.
"I saw three gentlemen on the east side of the dock and they noticed someone in the water," said witness Shannon Dyce. "They pulled him out of the water and saved him." Emergency responders swarmed the scene and took the two workers, a 30-year-old man and a 42-year-old man, to Harborview Medical Center. The 42-year-old was released later Sunday while the 30-year-old was still hospitalized Sunday night in satisfactory condition.
"We looked down the street we could see they were OK while getting in the ambulance so that was a big relief," Dyce said "I was petty shaken up until I at least knew they were safe."
Both workers were wearing personal flotation devices, city officials said.
