Flames erupted at the Ephrata United Methodist Church on Sunday after someone left a candle burning overnight in a bathroom there. Smoke was billowing from the roof of the building when the first firefighters arrived on scene. Eventually 40 firefighters from six different agencies were dispatched to battle the blaze. Fire officials say the fire spread from the bathroom to an office and then into the church's attic. The church's offices and study rooms have extensive damage, according to the Grant County Sheriff's Office. The sanctuary has heat, smoke and water damage as well. No one was injured.
