A section of State Route 20, also known as the North Cascades Highway, fully closed at 10 a.m. Monday so crews can respond to a wildfire.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) said SR 20 is closed between milepost 170.6 and milepost 177.4, which is about 20 miles west of Winthrop between Silver Star and Early Winters campground. Crews originally planned to close a two-mile stretch of road, but it was extended to make it easier to manage the closure, WSDOT said.
The Washington State Department of Natural Resources said the closure is in response to the Cedar Creek Fire, which is burning five miles southwest of Mazama. The fire was caused by lightning and has burned more than 75 acres, and was zero percent contained as of Monday morning.
