As wildfire conditions continue to worsen across the state, Labor and Industries has filed emergency rules to protect outdoor workers from wildfire smoke exposure.
Smoke from wildfires contain chemicals, gases, and fine particles that can harm health. L & I says the most concerning hazard is associated with the smallest particles, or Particulate Matter that are less than 2.5 micrometers (PM 2.5). These particles can get deep into the lungs, worsening existing health conditions like asthma, negatively impacting heart health, and increasing the risk of death.
The rule sets the standard for dangerously poor air quality at PM 2.5 concentrations of 55.5 micrograms per cubic meter or an Air Quality Index of 151.
The rules also states employers need to train workers and supervisors about wildfire smoke, monitor employees showing symptoms and take actions to remove or reduce exposure.
