Local firefighters are also sounding the alarm that the new police reform laws could have consequences for their ability to help people if police aren't there.
Yakima Fire's deputy chief tells me his firefighters are very nervous because in many calls they respond to, police may no longer be able to protect them. Without police there, they're worried about their safety and how well they'll be able to do their jobs.
"The laws are very clear in their intent that they want law enforcement to just leave," says Yakima County Sheriff Bob Udell.
Under the new use of force law going into effect on Sunday, police may not be able to respond to some of their typical calls, like welfare checks. If police do respond, they may have to leave shortly after they arrive if they don't have probable cause that a crime has occurred or there's an imminent threat to the public.
