Fire danger is rising across the state and around the West Coast this week.
Meteorologists said this wildfire season could be severe for many communities in the western states.
Western Washington's impressive snowpack is helping to lower the risk of large fires in the forests of the Cascades and Olympics. However, vegetation like shrubs is drying out in the lowlands, putting both Western and Eastern Washington in some level of drought.
"It could be pretty bad," said Dustin Guy, National Weather Service Seattle Meteorologist. "I mean it’s really hard to say. You can never really perfectly predict how bad it’s going to be because there’s individual events that can have a major effect as we saw last September. Short-term easterly wind event really just set things ablaze pretty quickly."
Forecasters said much of the west is ready to burn. Extreme and exceptional drought is plaguing Oregon, California and the Desert Southwest -- highlighted in the red and maroon in this map.
