The Yakima Fire Departments trucks are old and are more often needing repairs. Making them unavailable for service for hours, days and sometimes weeks. "I started to feel a little worried and concerned about it," Jeremy Rodriguez, Deputy Chief for YFD said. "Our eldest rig is 21 years old." He went on to say there hasn't been any issues with responses to fires or emergencies because of the mechanical difficulties, but believes that could happen in the future if the fleet remains the way it is. That concern is one reason why some city leaders want to make sure the fleet gets modernized and purchase two additional trucks. So far the City Manager and several council members support getting the new rigs. But if there's agreement, why hasn't the City approved their purchase yet? The cost of the rigs is about $1.5 million altogether which is an expense the City hasn't saved up for.
