The Kitsap County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of an early morning fire Thursday that damaged the wooden fishing pier on the north shore of Island Lake. Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue firefighters were called at 5:27 a.m. to the county park between Silverdale and Poulsbo when a person walking their dog called 911 after seeing the flames. Firefighters launched a boat to douse the blaze from multiple angles, according to a statement from the fire department. Alex Wisniewski, director of Kitsap County Parks Department, said the fire burned the far end of the pier but about 20 feet of the pier closest to shore was unharmed. “The tentative plan right now is not outright removal, but to rebuild,” Wisniewski said, cautioning that an assessment of the damage could change the repair plan, but his intent is to keep the pier at the lake for anglers.
