After a Christmas tree in Seattle caught fire because of faulty lights, a family is looking at an estimated loss of $100,000.
The fire happened in a home at the 3000 block of NW 63rd St. in Seattle Sunday morning. There were no injuries as a result of the fire.
Fires that occur because of holiday lights begin to become common as the year ends, according to Seattle Fire Line. The Seattle Fire Department says the following tips can help you handle those lights properly:
Avoid overloading electrical outlets for both indoor and outdoor lights.
Limit connecting of holiday lights to 3 strands.
Do not use frayed, broken or worn string lights.
Use low wattage mini lights at 2.5-watts or energy efficient LED bulbs, which operate at a cool-to-the-touch temperature.
Always unplug tree lights before leaving home or going to sleep.
