If the fire commissioners approve it, South Kitsap Fire and Rescue is planning to put a levy in front of voters in November to pay for more personnel for the fire district.
The current levy to pay for personnel, fuel, maintenance and training is expiring at the end of 2023 and provides 60% of the district’s revenue, said Fire Chief Jeff Faucett.
The levy is being presented to the SKFR Board of Commissioners on July 14, and lifting the lid to $1.50 will need to be approved by the board before the levy goes before voters. Currently, the levy sits at $1.21, meaning there would be a 29-cent increase. The levy would last for 10 years.
The fire levy lid lift would cost a homeowner with a home with an assessed value of $300,000 a total of $87 a year, or $7.25 per month, according to SKFR. The need for an increased levy comes from the rapid growth South Kitsap is experiencing, Faucett said.
