The Wapiti Fire continues to be a top national priority as the burn area encompasses more than 108,000 acres in central Idaho. Firefighting efforts over the Labor Day weekend brought the first sign of containment, up to 2% from the 0% containment reported previously, along with increased air support for the fire.
The first containment was reported north of the Homestead Crooked Creek area, located northwest of Stanley, the Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team said in a Tuesday operations briefing.
“We hope to continue that trend as we move south in the next couple days,” Travis Lipp, Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team’s operations section chief, said. Despite “unstable” weather Monday from thunderstorms bringing lightning and wind, “all the firelines held and the values at risk remain secure,” the Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team said in Tuesday’s update.
