Firefighters from across Wisconsin will gather Saturday to honor two men and one woman who gave their lives in service to their communities during the past year. The firefighters gather at the Wisconsin State Firefighters Memorial, in Wisconsin Rapids' Ben Hansen Park, each year to recognize all those who have given their lives in the line of duty and to pay special tribute to those who have died during the past year. The Final Alarm Roll Call Ceremony begins at 3:33 p.m. Saturday and the Final Alarm Procession through the streets of Wisconsin Rapids beginning at 7 p.m. The starting time of 3:33 p.m. is in recognition of a longstanding practice among Wisconsin firefighters of ringing a bell nine times, in three sets of three, to recognize a firefighter's passing, said John Steuck, secretary/treasurer for the Wisconsin State Firefighters Memorial board of directors.
