Fire broke out in an upper unit of a two-level residence in the Uptown area of the city late Sunday. Firefighters were called to the scene at 9:45 p.m. for the fire at 2106 61st St., where smoke and flames could be seen emanating from the top of the building. Residents looked on as firefighters took an ax to the roof, which was still smoking half an hour later, to vent the smoke and flames. All residents appeared to be out of the building, including Janice Torrez, who said she has lived in the building for the last six years. She said a neighbor knocked on the door of the building and woke her up as she was taking a nap. “Thank God I woke up,” said Torrez, who said she was the only one in her unit. “When I ran out I did see the smoke, but not inside.”
