The discovery of apparent pieces of military ordinance following a garage fire in Ashland led to the evacuation of part of an Ashland neighborhood Friday afternoon before it was later determined that they were both inert mortar training rounds. According to a statement issued by Ashland Mayor Debra Lewis, the discovery came when an Ashland firefighter, conducting a post fire investigation, discovered what state officials tentatively identified as an M69 mortar round. According to Wikipedia, the M69 is a training and practice round used in the M2 Mortar, which was used by American troops in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
