Eau Claire city officials won’t know how many engine bays they can include in a new fire station until after they receive bids next week, but a Fire Department official says more bays are needed. The city has budgeted $4.15 million for the station to be built at Malden Avenue and Birch Street on the city’s north side, with another $500,000 to be included in the 2018 capital improvement project budget. That money is projected to cover the cost of a new station with three bays. But on Monday, fire Battalion Chief Joe Kelly told City Council members the department needs five bays to meet the required service level. “Absolutely. One-hundred percent,” Kelly said when asked if the new fire station should have five bays.
