The busiest fire station in Eau Claire will soon get a second bathroom for employees and visitors to use. Allyn Bertrang, deputy fire chief, said Fire Station No. 5, 2500 Patton St., was built in 1975 when three firefighters — all men — worked from there. “We didn’t have females working in the fire service at that time,” he said. Though women have become part of the city Fire Department and the station has female visitors for tours and ride-alongs, it has still had only one bathroom since it was built. A $261,200 addition and renovation project — made possible by a Tuesday afternoon City Council vote that reallocated money from other projects in the Fire Department’s 2018 budget — will create the second bathroom, remodel locker rooms and add some office space.
