Seven people are homeless after an apartment fire Saturday night on Milwaukee's east side.
The two-alarm fire broke out on the third floor of the building, which housed three apartments near Downer Avenue and Park Place about 7:40 p.m. According to the Milwaukee Fire Department, nobody was hurt, but the landlord had to jump onto the balcony to escape.
Neighbors and witnesses were banging on windows Saturday night to alert the people inside to get out.
One cat died in the fire.
The people who lived in the building lost most of their belongings, and and WISN 12 News reporter Caroline Reinwald was told the majority of them had no renters insurance.
One man said the fire started in an apartment next to his 2-year-old son's bedroom. The child was not in there when it happened.
