Firefighters responded Saturday night to a Montrose barn fire that housed pheasant chicks, 3000 of which died in the fire, according to a representative from Wolff's Bellefontaine Farms. Firefighters from Verona, Fitchburg and Belleville responded to reports of a structure fire on the 6600 block of Henry Road at about 8:40 p.m. The fire burned until about 11 p.m., according to officials. Authorities said that investigators believe the fire was caused by melting snow shorting a transformer. It is believed that somewhere around 2000 of the Farm's 5000 chickens survived. According to officials, the fire does not appear to be suspicious. Though the amount of damage is unknown, the structure is considered a partial loss.
