The Hales Corners Fire Department is investigating why three on-duty personnel were unable to respond with a fire engine to a January car fire. Village Administrator Sandra Kulik said that one the morning of Jan. 16, three part-time firefighters who didn’t have certification for driving a fire engine were on duty when a 59-year-old woman reported her car was on fire. The incident came less than five months after staff shortages left Hales Corners with just one on-duty firefighter on Labor Day last year. The car was sitting in the middle of the road fully engulfed in flames near South 108th Street and Grange Avenue, about a mile from the village fire department.
