The South Shore Fire Department is preparing for some big changes in 2019. Later this month, department officials plan to start recruiting candidates for the department’s new emergency medical services station. The new EMS station, near the intersection of Spring Street and Emmertson Road, is under construction. South Shore Fire Chief Robert Stedman said they plan to move into it in June. Stedman said the department plans to hire six emergency medical technicians who, in two-person shifts, will allow the center to be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “It’s going to reduce the response times to that area of the Village of Mount Pleasant,” Stedman said.
