A suspected drunken driver plunged into the Fox River in downtown Waukesha earlier this month.
Witnesses said the driver, 19-year-old Viktoria Droegkamp, drove around a bend and clipped a tree before she careened into the river. "(The) car was going zig-zag," said Leslie Silvernail, who pulled the driver to safety.
Silvernail lives nearby and was outside that night when the car nearly hit him, too. He said he jumped in and pulled the driver out of the sinking car.
Police took her into custody.
"What made you decide to jump in the river?" WISN 12 News' Ben Wagner asked.
"I didn't even think. It was just something I had to do," Silvernail said.
The wreck is just a few hundred feet from where a truck went into the Fox River in May. Police said at least five vehicles have now plunged into the river in this area since 2013. The Waukesha Fire Department said it's rare that is has to make any water rescues there. Firefighters said the road is fine. Drivers just need to be careful.
