One person is dead after a structure fire in Stevens Point Wednesday evening, according to the Stevens Point Police Department's assistant chief Tom Zenner. Stevens Point Fire Department received the call about the fire on Sixth Avenue at 6:47 Wednesday evening. Plover Fire, Town of Hull Fire and the Stevens Point Police Department also assisted at the scene. SPFD's fire chief Bob Finn says they were told on arrival that someone might be trapped inside, and that the garage was fully engulfed when they arrived. Firefighters were not able to enter the structure right away to do a search. They discovered the fatality after the fire was reduced, Finn said. Finn noted there was a significant amount of thick black smoke in the sky, which was due to the fuel, oil and gasoline in the garage. No firefighters were hurt in the fire.
