First responders and a good Samaritan helped rescue a dog from icy Monona waters Thursday morning, officials said. The Monona Fire Department said firefighters and police responded at 10:08 a.m. to the 600 block of Pirate Island for a report of a dog that had somehow fallen into the water and couldn't get up on the ice to get out. Crews arrived and saw a woman in a kayak who was monitoring the dog's situation, but was unable to reach the animal, the fire department said. Fire personnel were able to throw a safety rope to the kayaker and pull her up on the ice toward shore. As she was pulled toward shore, she was able to grab the dog by its collar and guide it to safety. The dog was reunited with its owner, according to the report. The fire department warned residents that with warming temperatures, the ice is melting and dangerous conditions exist.
