A man is dead after an apartment fire on Milwaukee's north side.
Firefighters got a call about a fire at an apartment near 91st and Hampton around 8:45 Wednesday morning. When they arrived, they saw smoke and fire coming from the first floor.
Officials say they found a man, thought to be in his 60s, by the entryway and pulled him out of the apartment. Crews tried to save the man but his injuries were so severe he died on the scene. The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen. Fire officials say it's always a tough day when someone dies in a fire.
"When we have fatalities at fires, obviously it's troubling for our firefighters because the things that we see and go through on a daily basis, not necessarily even fire related but the other things we deal with as an emergency response fire department in the city. It can be tough on people at times," said Schuyler Belott, Battalion Chief for the Milwaukee Fire Department.
It's unknown whether the apartment had working smoke detectors. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
