An Appleton firefighter died in a Wednesday night shooting at the downtown transit center.
The firefighter was shot, along with three other people, while at the scene of a medical emergency, according to an Appleton Fire Department news release early Thursday morning. The firefighter, a 14-year veteran whose name was not released, died at a local hospital.
One of the other people shot was an Appleton police officer who is recovering in a local hospital, authorities said.
According to WISN-TV in Milwaukee, the firefighter was taken early Thursday morning to the Milwaukee Medical Examiner's Office, firefighters lined the street and saluted the flag-draped body.
The shooting took place at Valley Transit Center on East Washington Street, authorities said.
Police and firefighters responded to a medical call around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the transit center, and while treating the person, the situation "escalated into shots being fired," the department said in a statement Wednesday.
