The streets of downtown will be lined today with those who've turned out to pay their respects to a fallen firefighter, and large crowds are guaranteed at Appleton Alliance Church, where a public visitation is planned.
Mitchell Lundgaard, who was fatally shot Wednesday after responding to a medical emergency in downtown Appleton, will be laid to rest later today after a series of events — some public, some private.
When a line-of-duty death occurs, the services and ceremonies are steeped in tradition. The events feature symbolic songs, prayers and other acts of recognition.
"Firefighters’ funerals are always a public affair, even if there are private viewings," said Lawrence University history professor and former wildland firefighter Jake Frederick. "Firefighters are community individuals so their funerals are always something that is commemorated by the public as well."
