The district where a fallen Appleton firefighter's children attend school is providing counseling and other services in the wake of his death.
Mitchell Lundgaard, a 14-year veteran of the Appleton Fire Department, was shot and killed May 15 after responding to a medical call that authorities said escalated into a shootout between the patient and police. Lundgaard was the first Appleton firefighter to die in the line of duty in nearly 90 years.
Appleton Fire Chief Jeremy Hansen confirmed Lundgaard's children attend school in the Kimberly Area School District.
Nicole Noonan, the district's marketing and community coordinator, said in a statement that Kimberly schools are providing services to students and staff in need. The district declined to identify Lundgaard's children as students, citing privacy concerns.
