Firefighters extinguished a blaze at an apartment Sunday night after a child playing with smoking materials lit a mattress on fire. Fire crews responded to the blaze around 8:30 p.m. at an apartment complex on Eisner Court, according to the Sheboygan Fire Department. Officials said firefighters found a mattress burning outside of the apartment complex. They put out the fire, checked the building for more fires and ventilated the building. Officials said smoke detectors alerted residents, and they removed the mattress and evacuated the building. Officials estimated the fire caused about $1,000 in damages. “This incident is a reminder of the importance of working smoke detectors and their ability to quickly alert occupants of a fire,” officials said.
