If it’s been a decade since you put new smoke detectors in your home, it’s time to get them replaced.
Fortunately, Oconto Fire and Rescue Department has some that local homeowners can not only get, but installed as well, for free.
The department received 60 smoke alarms from the American Red Cross, which partners with local fire departments and agencies to provide the devices.
Firefighters have been installing them in homes several times each week, said Chief John Reed.
The department can’t install them rental properties, however, as that’s the responsibility of the landlord, he explained.
Homeowners can get put on the list by calling the fire department at 920-834-7775.
“If we put in all of these, we may be able to get some more from the Red Cross,” Reed said.
The public can count on that, said Justin Kern, the communications director for the American Red Cross in Wisconsin.
