Dozens of firefighters from multiple departments responded to a large apartment fire Sunday morning in Genoa City.
The five-alarm fire was reported just before 9 a.m. at the Pebble Brook Apartment complex on Walworth Street. William McCormack was visiting family across the street.
He said he didn’t think twice about running in.
"I just busted in the doors, telling everybody we need to get out," McCormack said. "Everybody is like wow, they’re in shock, you can tell they’re just walking around like deer in headlights pretty much."
Investigators said the fire started in one unit on the first floor and a man was rescued by a responding officer.
He was treated for minor injuries.
Investigators are still trying to determine how the fire started, but said it appears to be accidental.
They said at least six oxygen tanks exploded in one unit.
