Inside the Peshtigo Fire Museum are artifacts of the 1871 fire, which burned 1.5 million acres and took the lives of what is estimated to be between 1,200 and 2,400 people.
Now, to commemorate the sesquicentennial, a book called "The Great Fires in Wisconsin of 1871" has been republished in order to educate people about the fire.
A worker beyond the book, Mary Jane Herber, is excited that people can better educate themselves.
"It's the first hand for the fires on both sides of the bay and it explains very clearly, that the fire on the east side did not jump the bay, but came from the south and went north," said Herber.
Today, the estimated damage from the fire is valued to be around 4 billion dollars.
While Frank Tilton published his own book on the fire in 1871, some who are involved in local history view the original copy as a mystery.
