Appleton firefighter Mitch Lundgaard will be among the 215 names added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Maryland this weekend.
Lundgaard's name will become a permanent part of the memorial during the 40th Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend.
Lundgaard, 36, died on May, 15, 2019, as his crew responded to an emergency medical call at the at the Valley Transit Center.
He was killed after a man who had just been revived from a drug-over dose opened fire on officials who just saved his life. Eighty-seven firefighters died in the line of duty in 2020 and 82 firefighters died in 2019. Forty-six firefighters who died in the line of duty in previous years will also be honored. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation will present each family with an American flag flown over the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial and the U.S. Capitol.
