Janesville fire officials say more than a dozen firefighters from multiple departments responded to a house fire on S. Locust St. Monday afternoon.
The call came in just before 3 p.m. Monday for a report of a garage fire. When crews got on scene, they found smoke coming out of the first floor of the two-floor home, not from the garage.
Witnesses nearby told fire crews they believed a woman who lived in the house was still on the second floor. The first units on scene were able to quickly put out the fire on the first floor, while the second crew helped the woman evacuate from the second floor of the house.
The fire department says a man who also lived in the home tried to put out the fire before the fire department got there, but evacuated when he was unable to put it out.
